Common HR Interview Questions and How to Answer Them
A practical preparation guide for common HR interview questions, with advice on making concise, relevant and genuine answers.
How to prepare for an HR interview
HR interviews commonly explore a candidate's background, communication, motivation, career goals, workplace behaviour and suitability for the role.
Before the interview, read the job description carefully and identify the responsibilities, required skills and qualifications relevant to the position.
Preparation should help you organize your thoughts without turning your answers into memorized statements.
1. Tell me about yourself
This question gives you an opportunity to provide a brief professional introduction.
A useful structure is to mention your current educational or professional background, relevant skills or experience, and the type of opportunity you are seeking.
Keep the answer relevant to the position rather than providing a lengthy personal history.
2. Why do you want this job?
Explain what interests you about the role and how it relates to your skills, experience, education or career goals.
Review the job description before the interview so that your answer can address the actual responsibilities of the position.
3. What are your strengths?
Choose strengths that are relevant to the position and support them with a brief example.
For example, instead of simply saying that you have good communication skills, explain how you have used communication in an academic project, previous job, training activity or other relevant situation.
You can also review our workplace skills guide for additional areas to consider.
4. What is one area you need to improve?
Choose a genuine area for development and explain what you are doing to improve it.
The purpose of the answer is not to claim that you have no weaknesses. Instead, demonstrate self-awareness and a willingness to learn.
5. Why should we hire you?
Connect your relevant skills, qualifications, experience and understanding of the role to the employer's requirements.
Avoid making unsupported claims. Specific examples can make your answer clearer and more useful to the interviewer.
6. Where do you see yourself in the future?
Discuss the skills, responsibilities or professional development you would like to pursue over time.
Your answer should be realistic for the role and should show that you have considered how the position could fit into your broader career development.
If you are still exploring career options, our career path guide may help you organize your thinking.
7. Why did you leave your previous job?
Keep the answer factual and professional. Explain the relevant circumstances without making unnecessary negative comments about previous employers or colleagues.
If you are a fresher, you can instead discuss why you are looking for your first professional opportunity and what you hope to learn from the role.
8. How do you handle workplace challenges?
Use a specific example when possible. Explain the situation, what responsibility you had, what action you took and what you learned from the experience.
Examples from education, projects, internships, previous employment or training can be useful, especially for candidates with limited professional experience.
9. How do you work with a team?
Describe how you communicate with team members, share information, handle responsibilities and contribute toward a common objective.
Where possible, give a specific example rather than simply saying that you are a good team player.

10. Do you have any questions for us?
Prepare a few relevant questions before the interview. You may ask about the responsibilities of the position, training, team structure, expected priorities or the next stage of the hiring process.
Avoid asking questions that have already been clearly answered during the interview or that can easily be found in the job information.
Use examples in your answers
Specific examples can make interview answers easier to understand. Examples may come from previous employment, education, internships, projects, training or other relevant experiences.
A simple structure is to describe the situation, explain what you did and state the result or lesson where appropriate.
Keep answers concise and relevant
An interview answer does not need to include every detail of your experience. Focus on information that is relevant to the question and the position.
Listen carefully to the question before answering, and ask for clarification if you are unsure what the interviewer is asking.
Prepare your resume before the interview
Your interview answers should be consistent with the information in your resume. Review your education, experience, projects, skills and other information before the interview so that you can discuss them accurately.

Prepare for the complete interview process
HR questions may be only one part of a recruitment process. Depending on the employer and role, candidates may also experience screening calls, technical discussions, assessments, practical tests or other interview stages.

For BPO and customer-support roles
Candidates applying for BPO or customer-support positions may need to prepare for questions related to communication, customer interaction, teamwork, work schedules and role-specific responsibilities.
If you are exploring this career area, see our BPO career guide for additional information.
Keep information current
Interview formats and employer requirements can vary between organizations and roles. Always review the current job description and follow the employer's instructions.
Important employment, regulatory or role-specific requirements should be verified with the relevant employer or authoritative source.
